Did a great job on my Sony 46" LCD,but not so great on my Samsung 46" LED

1Probably not worth it  Jun 13, 2010
I bought this disk thinking I'd see major improvements in my flat panel (plasma) tv after using it. The content is certainly not pro. As advertised, it doesn't bore you with charts etc, using video footage instead. Ultimately I found I had my settings very close (to what the disk prescribes) anyway.

I think you can save a ton and do a little research online and tweak your settings.

I am a bit of a nerd, so if you feel totally green with tech and tvs, maybe it's worth the money to get a more laymen tool like this.

It also seems suspect that the disk is in standard definition (NTSC) while it is clearly labeled as an HDTV calibration tool! The resolution and color space is different and it's hard to believe the calibration wouldn't be affected by this!!

1Dissapointing  May 28, 2010
I was expecting maybe too much from this DVD.
It allowed me to tweak one or two settings....
The rest is very basic stuff for which you don't need the DVD.
However the host and the overall production value of the DVD might be worth the $$!!!
It is so cheesy it is hilarious!!! 80's music video meets spanish soap opera meets home made video

4Maybe I am simple minded  Mar 06, 2010
For years your television was calibrated by some folks at Sony whose principal concern was that people look vaguely like people and the sky looks blue and not purple. As long as video arrived at the set with 480 lines of living color, this suited everyone.

Welcome to the digital age. Our "video receivers" are designed for high definition and we have become accused to watching droplets of sweat fly off the face of NFL running backs as they twist away from linebackers. With 1080p and Blu-ray and the right receiver it is not unusual to see a movie in a format even more spectacular than in a theater.

All of this has combined to create a demand for a new product-the calibration DVD. Monster who seeks to sell more gold-tipped HDMI cables figured out people would only buy them if the cables delivered the truly amazing video experience. But when people adjust brightness, contrast, sharpness and the like, do they really know what they are doing? Monster figures they don't and by and large they are right.

If you have an electronics engineering degree from MIT, you probably will not need this DVD. For the rest of us, the "simple minded" as one reviewer called us, it is a nice tool. The interface is designed to speak to the technologically challenged who can be assumed to be the lowest common denominator. I, for one, know how to find the brightness menu, while the DVD assumes I do not. Big deal. People speak down to me all the time, figuring that because of my profession I am incapable of understanding car mechanics or dentistry. (As to one of those I am). If you follow the instructions and it is hard not to if you have completed third grade, you will have a near perfect picture on your $2000 HD video reciever-and that is why you bought it in the first place.

4Good for Setting Black and White Levels Quickly and Painlessly  Jan 26, 2010
Is it for videophiles or audiophiles? No, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a good, quick down and dirty way to make a few quick but important adjustments to your display that will at least get them in the ball park, espescially black and white levels. Hey, your grandma could use this calibration disc, and while grammie's adjustments may not compete with a professional calibrator's, her picture will be improved, how much so depends on how far the display is off in the first place.
